Heart Check 2013

Nicholas had his annual cardiologist appointment today.   He had an EKG, ultrasound and meeting with his cardiologist.  She found no new changes, which is a good thing.  She had a lot of compliments for Nicholas as well.  She said that he was so well-behaved for the entire appointment.  Because of his compliant nature, she suggested we schedule an MRI for him next year.  Nicholas’ heart is enlarged due to his valve issue.  It hasn't changed size since last time, but an MRI would show more accurately its mass.  Unfortunately for us, this appointment will have to be downtown instead of local.  I told Nicholas that Evan can take off work and we’ll make a special day of it.

Surgery is very likely in Nicholas’ future, but “when?” is the question.  The longer we can hold off the better.  The technology keeps getting better and better, so it would not be open heart surgery like he had when he was younger.

Side note:  Daniel is about the age that Nicholas was when he had his surgery.  Nicholas would have been so little.  It makes me sad that we couldn't be there with him then.  But, we are now.

After the appointment, we headed to lunch with Nana and Daniel.  They waited very patiently for us in the waiting room – our appointment was long.  Daniel was a rock star and kept himself occupied the entire time.

While we were out we got Nicholas a new pair of shoes.  He has a wide foot, so his selection is usually slim, but today he found the perfect shoes.  I was a little hesitant to let him have them because of their bright nature, but they made him so happy.   At least, we’ll be able to pick him out in a crowd.  Maybe he could even light our way in the dark.  J

It was a long day, but I think we all had fun.  Nicholas is going to finish off the day with a visit from a fireman with his fire truck at church tonight.

So, we’re thankful for a good report today, but we’re praying that surgery is years in the future!
