What a Memory!

I have been alluding for awhile now that Nicholas had something big in the works.  I am proud to reveal that Nicholas is a Memory Master this year for CC!  He wasn't sure that he was going to try for it, but he worked hard on his weak areas and accomplished his goal.  Not only did he know the information, but he was able to recite it very quickly.  It took him only about 40 minutes.  The average time is usually 1-1 ½ hours.  I knew he could do because he worked so hard this year!

I told him that we would be proud of him whether he passed or not.  But, I’m glad the hard work paid off.  This year’s campus will have 4 Memory Masters.  Two are from my class!  We actually all met on Friday at one family’s house to do the third proof.  The first proof is done by a parent.  The second is done by the other parent, or another adult.  The third proof is done by the child’s tutor (or another tutor if your child is in your class).  This is the proof that you need to know everything!  Then, the director spot checks it by asking about 25% of the material.

Next week is our campus’ closing ceremony.  All the kids will be recognized for their participation.  Then, the Memory Masters will get additional recognition.  They will also receive a certificate and a Memory Master t-shirt.

Nicholas told me that I could probably be Memory Master too, but I think he actually knows more than me.  I think I know a good portion though.  Just to give you an idea of some of the things he’s memorized.  Here is a small list:

A chronological timeline of 161 events and people
24 U.S. history sentences, including the Preamble of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
All the states and capitals (including their location) and other geographical features of the U.S., such as rivers, mountains, lakes, trails, etc.
24 science facts, including the first 12 elements of the periodic table and different parts of the body
Latin rules and vocabulary including John 1:1-7 in Latin and English
English grammar including the principal parts of 11 irregular verbs
He skip counted multiplication tables up through 15 x 15, some basic geometry formulas and unit conversions

That’s just a lot of information!  To say that we are enjoying Classical Conversations is an understatement.  What Nicholas has memorized is allowing him to put memory pegs in while he is young.  That way when he is ready to expand on the information he will already have learned the basics and won’t have to memorize them when he is older.

We have seen the benefits with Daniel too.  As we drove home from the tutor proof on Friday, Nicholas told me to listen.  Here Daniel was singing, “To ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”  Yes, that came out of my almost 3-year-old’s mouth.  That is the end of the Preamble to the Constitution.  He’s getting his memory pegs in early.

So, if you see Nicholas, I’m sure he’ll be happy to share some of these facts with you.  We’re so proud of him!

More Letter Review

We finished up another week of letter review.  Daniel likes Bingo a lot, so we played it a couple more times.  He also likes taking the 9 cents that we use for the game up with his other money when he is done.  He is getting a lot better with his letters and is starting to correct himself on the few that he keeps getting mixed up.

BINGO!

We also made a pretend candy box out of letters.  I put the glue down and then we put the letters in order.  Then, I randomly asked him the letters.

Of course, we had to do tracing – lot of tracing!  He must have done at least 6 sheets.  I still am not sure if he’s a righty or lefty yet.

Daniel also started up Story Time again with Nana.  I can’t tell you how much he loves it.  He went down for his nap later that day and woke up crying.  I asked him what was wrong and he said, “I want to go to Story Time”.  I wonder if he was dreaming about it.

We have our last CC tomorrow.  We will be happy for the break, but sad not to see everyone on a weekly basis.  However, as soon as CC ends that afternoon, we begin our Spring Break.  I’m not sure how we will be spending it, but I think we’re all in need of a little break.

I'll leave you with a few pictures of the boys.  Nicholas asked me to take some pictures of them together.  I think they had a good time posing for me.

We’re Still Singing . . .

. . . our ABC’s.  Daniel and I worked on reviewing the alphabet this week.  We worked over several days to make a giant alphabet caterpillar.  This is something I had Nicholas make too.  We just didn't do it all at once.  For Daniel, it just worked better doing it at the end.  He knows most of his letters.  He gets a couple confused that look pretty similar, such V and Y.
He just put a crayon mark on each letter.

Reviewing that day's letters

Now that the caterpillar is done we need to find a place to hang it.

I also played BINGO with Daniel.  I pulled out a letter and asked him to identify it.  Then he looked at his board to see if he had a match.  When it was all over he got to keep the pennies.

Cheeseball!

Nicholas had a pretty busy week.  He started swimming lessons on Tuesday evening.  He has them twice a week for 3 ½ weeks.  We've never done lessons in the evening before, so it is strange.  But, it is still light out, which doesn't make it feel too late.

Nicholas had a great lesson on Thursday.  He persevered in some areas that have been hard for him.  There were tears in my eyes because I was just so proud of him.

No pictures of Nicholas, but I found this other future swimmer

This week we have a lot to do.  Nicholas has more swimming lessons and Daniel’s story time starts up again at the library.  Nicholas also needs prayer for around 10:30 AM on Friday morning.  He is tackling a very big challenge that morning.  There will be more on that in a future post.  Let’s just say he’ll be very tired mentally when it is all over.

CC is almost over though.  We have two left.  Then we have several months off until it starts up again.  But, I’m sure it will continually be on my mind as I am tutoring again next year.  I’ll probably spend most of the break doing some planning, so I have less to do during the actual school year.

Finally, I ordered some curriculum for next year since the company was having free shipping.  I've been looking through it, so it is in a pile by my desk.  Daniel wanted to know whose books they were, so I told them that they were for Nicholas.  He asked, “Where’s my books?”  I told him I would get him some.  Then, I asked him what he wanted to learn.  He answered, “Letters and numbers.”  I think that I can make that happen.  I’m so excited for the year ahead and finishing strong this year too!

Now Daniel Knows His ABCs

We finished our ABC theme weeks with the letter Z.  I ended up doing the same thing I did for Nicholas five years ago.  Daniel turned his Z into a zebra.  He wasn't really into coloring it, but he sure does love the gluing part.

I also gave him a zebra coloring page to color.  He asked for a pencil instead.

We continued to work on Daniel’s colors.  I pointed to the word and he knew what it was by the color.  He colored each zipper the designated color.

He was telling me the colors.

So silly

Daniel did more tracing.  He can stay in the lines when he chooses to, but sometimes he gets a little crazy with the pencil.

He did a little impromptu sorting activity.  We had some leftover Valentine’s cards and he put like cards together.

Daniel also dot painted some Zs.  There were also pictures of items that started with z.  Apparently, zucchini is a very funny word.

Showing Nicholas his red hand

We are going to spend our last two months of school with other themes, such as different shapes and numbers.  But, I’m going to spend the next two weeks just working on letter review.  I want to see how many letters he really knows.  I have a couple activities that we will do for those weeks.

In other news, we are celebrating Nicholas’ birthday again tomorrow with Evan’s family.  This is a little confusing to Daniel since we told him on Tuesday that Nicholas’ birthday was over.  He really wants his own birthday to come.

While he is waiting, we did buy him something new.  We got him a new car seat.  The old one will go in Evan’s car and we’ll put the new one in my car.  I’m not sure if he likes it though.  What do you think?

There are a lot of exciting things happening as CC winds down.  We have three weeks left and we may have some exciting news to share by the end of the month for Nicholas.  I’ll keep you updated.

Being Eight is Great!

I can’t believe we have an eight-year-old.  I’m glad that his birthday fell on a Monday this year because Evan got to share in all of the fun.

First, you may notice something missing in many of his pictures.  On Saturday night, he pulled out his other front tooth.  Now, I say he because he actually yanked it out.  But, I did spend 10 minutes previous to that last pull, loosening it more for him.  It was starting to hang a little crooked in his mouth.  I figured he would want to say that he lost 4 teeth while he was seven.  He was very excited.  He did say it is harder to eat now.

And, I think it is safe to say that Nicholas had a very fun and full 8th birthday.  Evan and I decided to give Nicholas one present that morning and the rest later.  He was happy that it was the CD he had been asking for.  He took it to CC as his visual aid for his speech about his favorite holiday.
A cool musical card that Evan picked out.

You can really see the missing teeth in this one.

Third Day

Because CC fell on his birthday, we decided to bring a treat for lunchtime to share with everyone.  My sister has been making the boys’ cakes for years.  This year she even volunteered to make something for CC too.  We had chocolate dipped pretzels.  They were a big hit and went fast.

Also, at recess, one of the moms planned an Easter egg hunt.  They had to find the eggs, dump the candy in their bowl or cup, then go back and find more.  Both boys enjoyed this game and both had a lot of sugar.  I was pleased to see Nicholas giving out some of his candy to some of the younger kids that didn't get as much.  He really is a sweet boy.
He found an egg!

After CC, we headed to the bowling alley for a redo.  We tried to bowl a couple of months ago, but could only get one quick game in because a league was about to start.  But, this time we were able to play two games.  Even Daniel got in on the fun.  It was cute to see him in his little bowling shoes.

Nicholas found a lot of success at bumper bowling.  He even improved his score during his second game which included a strike and multiple spares.  Daniel also bumper bowled, but he used a ramp to get his ball down the lane.  Each time he knocked some pins down, he did a “happy dance”.

Once we were done bowling, we headed to my parents’ house.  G.G. joined us shortly after to have dinner and cake with us.  My sister prepared homemade pizzas and then, we had a double-layer cookie cake for dessert.  That meal was right up my alley.
It wasn't my birthday, but cookies are one of my favorite things!

We also opened presents.  He received Legos and clothes from us.  I found him a shirt I knew he would love, so I had the boring clothes put on top of it.  The shirt was a hit!

After a long, but fun day, we had one more stop to make.  Swimming lessons sign-ups happened to start that afternoon.  I tried to get Nicholas into a Saturday class, but they were all full (spring lessons always fill up the fastest).  So, now he will be going Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  My hope is that Evan will be home early enough to take him to the majority of the lessons.

I was also able to sign up Daniel for his first lessons.  He will start the week before his 3rd birthday.  He’s been talking about it lately.  He definitely has sat through plenty of Nicholas’ lessons, so he’s probably more than ready to start his own.

So, that’s just a glimpse into our busy day.  We are so happy that we were able to celebrate Nicholas the entire day.  He has been waiting to be 8 for many months.  I hope it is one of his best years yet.

Who is 8?  This guy!
