Kids These Days

While we’re waiting to see how the weather will hold up tonight, I decided to put up the post for K week.  Daniel started the week by decorating his K with kangaroos.

After gluing them on he was excited to use some colored pencils to color.  Now that he’s snapped all of our crayons in half, he never wants to use them anymore.

He glued together a kangaroo with my help.

I gave him a bowl of raisins for a snack.  Hidden in it were a couple of chocolate kisses for K week.

Of course, he wanted that snack for the next day too.

Some miscellaneous activities this week were:

The boys both like to dance to the history songs for CC.  And, yes, Daniel knows a lot of the words to many of the songs, including the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.  He also tries to say the word “constitution”.

Daniel and I played a game where I asked him to show me a letter, A-K.  He knew most of them.

Also, this week Nicholas made a fun project at his church home school group.  They did fresco paintings like the Greeks.  It is where you paint into plaster (or in this case, a plaster/flour concoction).  Someone told him that it looked like a pizza and now that’s what he says it is.

Finally, we had a power outage for an hour and a half Thursday morning.  But, life must go on.  So, Nicholas did his math by the light of the sliding glass door.
The flash is on, so it was a lot darker.

Daniel found something to do too.  I guess K is for Kindle.
Stacking the States

I’m still keeping things low-key for Daniel and he’s still asking to do school.  In fact, he keeps telling me that it is O week.  Maybe he’s heard that I have some fun activities planned that week, or he just likes that letter, but he really wanted it to be O week.  If I wasn't so Type A, I may have let him have his O week, but he’ll just have to wait another month.

I have some pictures of the boys from a Halloween event in my parents’ neighborhood last weekend, but I’ll wait to share them after tonight.  Hopefully, the rain will skip trick-or-treating hours this year.  Last year, we weren't so lucky!

Daniel Be Jake

“Daniel be Jake” is something I've heard a lot from his mouth in the last month or so.  He loves a show on Disney Jr. about a pirate named Jake.  In fact, he could watch this show all day, if I’d let him.  He’s going to be Jake for Halloween.  And, the majority of the Christmas presents that I’m going to get him are Jake-related.  He also wants a “Jake cake” for his birthday (which is several months away).  So, when J week came around, I knew there had to be at least a little Jake involved.

But, first, we decorated J with jelly beans.  They weren't the real jelly beans because we get enough sugar here.  If I knew how orderly he was going to be, I would have printed off more.

He ended up using a marker for the rest of the J.  He matched the color of the marker to the jelly bean.

Then, he decided to just color the rest.

Just to show you how his mind thinks, I caught him earlier that morning doing one-to-one correspondence.  His cereal bowl had five shapes around the rim.  He took one piece of cereal and put it on each shape, counting as he went along.

He did get to use his beloved dot paint with a picture of Jake.

And, this is what he looks like when he watches Jake on t.v.

We did a few other activities this week that helped with his fine motor skills.  He used a toddler knife to cut his banana (which he didn't even eat).

He did some pre-writing tracing.

Using one of our broken crayons

Then, he practiced putting the sticker on the right place on the picture.  There is a big white space and the sticker fills in the picture.  He liked this a lot, but I didn't want to go through the entire book in one day, so he did three sheets.

Since we were home a lot this week, we did get a lot done with Nicholas’ school work too.  Nicholas is learning about sea creatures this year.  We learned that a female sea turtle has to pull all of her weight on her front legs to get to the shore to lay her eggs.  The book wanted the student to try and move himself along the ground with only his arms.  Well, Nicholas claimed that it wasn't too hard – that is until more weight appeared on his back.

I decided to mix up Nicholas’ review for CC by turning it into a game.  We play a lot of games on Mondays at CC, but rarely at home.  This ended up being a good time for everyone.  Nicholas got most of the answers right.  It ended up being a math lesson too since he wanted to add up his own scores.  We’ll probably end up doing this again in the future.

The boys will be wearing their costumes a lot this week.  I know at least one boy that is excited.  We’ll see about Daniel.  I already revealed that Daniel will be Jake.  I’ll wait to reveal Nicholas’ costume later.

I Week

We finished our super busy week, which meant that I Week was very slim.  Daniel did eat ice cream last Sunday and yesterday, so that counts, right?  We did a few activities, but nothing too exciting.

Daniel decorated his I with insects.  I always let him glue the pictures wherever he feels like it.  This week he was very orderly.

Why does he look too cool for school?

Because he is!

He colored a picture of an ice cream cone.  He told me that it was chocolate ice cream.  He’s a kid after my own heart.

We also glued different color ice cream scoops onto a triangle ice cream cone.  We talked about different colors as we glued them on.

Finally, my cats have gone really crazy lately.  Both of them have started to like Nicholas.  They will rub up against him.  They don’t mind being petted.  It’s crazy.  They’re not as comfortable around Daniel, but once in a while they feel safe enough to sit by him.  So, I is also for Isabella.

Comfy or crazy?

Everyone loves hands around their neck, right?

In closing, here is a small re-cap of our busyness:

Monday we had CC.  I’m getting more comfortable being a tutor.  I am figuring out what works and what doesn't.  The hardest part is getting active 6 and 7-year-olds to listen.  But, the planning is less time consuming and it looks like the kids are having fun.

Tuesday we had our home school group at church.  This week they started learning about the Greeks.  Nicholas enjoyed himself a lot.  His class even got to make an Olympic crown.  He liked it so much that he wanted to wear it outside the house too.

On Wednesday we had Nicholas’ follow-up appointment with his cardiologist.  The appointment was only 20-25 minutes.  Unfortunately, the wait in the waiting room was an hour!!!   The news was not what we wanted to hear, but it wasn't terrible.  Nicholas will have surgery sometime in the next year or two (maybe three).  We were hoping he would be older before he had surgery, but it is what his heart needs.  So, he’ll have another MRI and a stress test next year before his cardiologist makes a decision.  For now, no changes or restrictions.

Thursday I had a dentist appointment.  I had a great appointment and the boys had a great time with their Aunt Amy.  She didn't have school that day, so she took them out on her errands.  They always have fun with their aunt.

Friday we went to the grocery store right when it opened.  The boys were awake and it was the only time I could really go, so we got our shopping done in record time.  Both boys are usually very well-behaved in the store, so I don’t have to worry about anything but shopping.

Once we got home, we had a short time before we had to head to my CC Tutor Meeting.  I had to get together with the other tutors and the director to discuss the next 6 weeks while the kids played.  This meeting was supposed to be pretty quick.  Unfortunately, there were about 11 children playing together, so one of us moms was always dealing with something, including a certain 2-year-old that threw a toy and hit a 6-year-old in the head.  ;)  Hopefully, we can come up with a better strategy for everyone to get along for the next meeting.

On Saturday Nicholas had his swimming lesson.  Daniel and I usually just play on the Kindle during it.  That way I can keep him entertained, but also keep an eye on what Nicholas is doing at the same time.  Nicholas only has one lesson to go in this session and thankfully, Evan will be off that day to see it.

After swimming and Daniel’s nap, we went to celebrate my dad’s birthday.  A few party guests weren't feeling so great, so it ended up being dinner for three (my parents and me).  We had a good time in spite of Amy and Nicholas not feeling well.  I did have a very hungry boy when we got home though.  When Nicholas doesn't want to eat you know he’s not feeling well, so as soon as he asked for food, I knew his tummy troubles were over.  Daniel, on the other hand, felt fine.  He had some fruit, ice cream, and cake.  The boy doesn't eat that much during the day.  I usually get 1-2 good meals out of him, but never three.

So, that’s just a glimpse into our week.  We have CC tomorrow, but then the week slows down.  We’re actually going to home school at home!  It’s an amazing concept.  And, people think homeschoolers are not socialized people that hole up in their houses all day.  Our problem is that there can be too many options.  We actually have to say “no” to some things.

So, I'm looking forward to a more relaxed week.  Now, onto the letter J . . .

Happy H Week is Over

I realize with all of the craziness of last week that I have yet to post about H week.  We had a lot going on, so Daniel didn't do as many activities as I originally intended.  That will also probably be the case with I week as we are pretty busy this week too.

He did decorate his H with hats.  I gave him a chance to use the glue stick by himself, but I kept a close eye on him.

Later that week I traced Daniel’s hands.  He didn't want to color them, but he’s always up for dot paint!

Of course, H was for hospital and heart!  Nicholas had more of an H week than Daniel.

Being silly

Nicholas also had a dentist appointment last week.  He’s old enough to go in by himself, so Daniel and I just occupy ourselves in the waiting room.  He did a great job stacking these blocks all by himself.

Finally, we made a hippo out of paper.  Some of the body parts were in the shape of a heart.   I think his favorite part was using markers.

How exciting!

He hasn't mastered showing his face and the picture at the same time.

That was the excitement of H week.  You can’t win them all.  I do have to make one comment about something that happened today.  I already know from experience that you have to be careful what your kids hear.  That was reiterated today when Daniel repeated something and blew both Nicholas and I away.

Every day I try to review the CC memory work with Nicholas.  Daniel is usually in the room and has picked up a few words here and there of the various sentences that Nicholas has learned.  Well, today, I was reviewing English grammar and asked Nicholas, “What’s an infinitive?”  And Daniel knew almost the entire answer word-for-word!  Both Nicholas and I were so shocked and excited.

Both of the boys are learning and growing so much.  It is nice to be here to celebrate each milestone with them.  Tomorrow we’ll be finding out the MRI results at Nicholas’ appointment with his cardiologist.  This is a “milestone” I never expected to have to deal with, but I’m thankful for the excellent care that he has/will receive.  I’m hoping that we'll have a better idea of what’s to come down the road.

And, that’s all for now.  There’s more busyness ahead . . .
