Another Year Down!

We are officially done with our school year!  Nicholas completed the second grade, and Daniel finished his junior preschool (or whatever you want to call it).  This year had a lot of growth.  It was not perfect and without its challenges, but I feel like homeschooling is still working for us.

Daniel wasn’t too interested in doing school this week.  The theme was supposed to be about him and his birthday.  I managed to get a couple of activities in, but he really just wanted to play with toys.
Don't mess with the water pen!

He did put the different presents in order of size.

Daniel worked on his pre-writing skills by drawing a line from the child to the birthday party.

He then put the birthday hats in order of size.  He used his pencil to point out which one was the biggest.

Finally, I cut out the letters in his name.  I had him identify the letters and then I put them in order.  We recited them a few times before I mixed him up and had him tell me the order.  He did okay on that task and only needed a little coaching.

Daniel also had some really great swimming lessons.  He is following all of the instructions and doing so well.  He even told the teacher he wanted to swim by himself, so he went underwater and kind of swam a couple of inches to the wall.  He also contemplated going off of the diving board.  They got him up there, but he isn’t quite ready to jump yet.  He’s definitely a little fish though.

Nicholas finished basketball this past weekend.  He seemed to enjoy himself and even scored his first basket in the last game.  He is a big fan of dribbling and trying to get the rebound.  I am glad that he has had the opportunity to try so many different sports.

His last school week was pretty light.  In the last month, subjects had been dropping off as we completed different books.  I know some people want to see a report card, but we don’t do those.  Since I am Nicholas’ teacher I know how well he did this year.  I know which areas were a breeze and which ones needed more effort.  That is what I like about homeschooling – I can tailor his schooling to his specific skills and abilities.  But, if anyone wants to reward grades, he did score pretty high on his standardized testing results, especially in Total Language (grammar).

This summer he will be doing some very light school work each week.  He will continue to work on his math, so he doesn’t forget anything.  I prefer not to spend weeks on review in the fall.  We will review his spelling just to reinforce what he learned this year.  And, he wants to keep up with his cursive handwriting.  Finally, he will do the library’s summer reading program.  Nothing too taxing.

Daniel will also do the summer reading program.  In addition, we’ll work on recognizing numbers 1-10.  I’ll probably print off some fun papers to do too.  He always asks to do school and will probably be disappointed if I don’t have anything for him too.

Speaking of Daniel, we have some more birthday celebrating to do this coming weekend.  My parents also celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.  So, it should be a fun time with family.  Hopefully, I’ll remember to break out my camera.

He’s Three!

For the longest time now, whenever you ask Daniel how old he is, he answers “Eight!”  We assume that’s because he’s always trying to keep up with Nicholas.  It is still hard to believe that he is already three though.  He spent a lot of the day telling us it was his birthday today.  We tried to make it as fun as possible since his family parties are still to come.

Since Daniel is not big on cake we needed to find something for us to be able to put candles in so we could sing to him.  We opted for a big chocolate muffin from one of the local grocery stores.  It had a drizzle of fudge on top.  Unfortunately, when I took it out of the wrapper it kind of fell apart, so it looked a little sad.

I think he found it delicious though because he ate most of it.

Nicholas ended up with a donut and Evan had a cinnamon roll.

I opted for cereal.  I knew we were having a big eating day ahead, so I was trying to start out on a lighter note.  However, I did take a few bites of the muffin when he was finished (it is my favorite too).

Then, we opened presents.  We bought Daniel a coloring book that uses water to color the pictures.  Once it dries, he can do it again.  He’s had one before and loves these books (I may or may not have purchased a couple more of them for a future occasion).  We also got him a reusable sticker pad.
Thank you, G.G.!

Nicholas picked out his own gift for him.  He got him a smaller race track to the one Daniel got for Christmas.  We had to put the big one away to get ready to show the house, so this is a nice replacement for now.
Nicholas is trying to read his homemade card to Daniel, but Daniel just wants the present.

Here it is!
Finally, we brought out Daniel’s big gift from us – a balance bike!  This is a smaller frame bike with no pedals and no training wheels.  The concept is that the child is supposed to learn how to balance, so they can skip the training wheels stage and go right to a two-wheeler.  Daniel already has the hang of it and has been zooming around our kitchen table all day (it is going outside very shortly).

Later in the morning we headed out to a couple of stores.  Evan had to make a return and also needed some new clothes.  I teased him that it felt like his birthday with all the “gifts” he got for himself today.  But, our main purpose was to take Daniel out to lunch.  We chose to eat at a place that had a play area.  Daniel enjoyed his lunch of an applesauce pouch and a chocolate milk.  Even on his birthday, our picky eater only ate what he really wanted.  Although, he did have a few bites of my wrap.

After lunch we headed home for Daniel’s nap.  It was amazing that he actually fell asleep because he knew what was happening after his nap.  Aunt Amy came over and went with us to get ice cream.  Daniel had been talking about it for days that he wanted chocolate ice cream with sprinkles and M&Ms, and that is what he got.
Presents from Aunt Amy!

The rest of the day we spent at home and let him play with all his new presents.  All in all, I think he had a good day.

Daniel has really changed a lot in the last few months.  He is looking more and more like a little boy and less like a baby.  He can tell you stories.  He is able to do a lot more things by himself.  He is also ornery and a bit of a stinker, but he keeps things interesting.

I am really settling in and enjoying the stage we are in with both of the boys.  They aren't without their challenges, but they are easier and more fun in other ways.  It will be fun to see what age three holds for Daniel this year.

Letter Review

This week I thought I would do a quick letter review.  Daniel has most of them down.  There are a few similar letters that trip him up, but he’ll get them.

I cut out all the letters for him.  Each square contained the letter and a picture that started with that letter.  We said each letter and he named the picture.  Then we put them all in order.

I'm not sure if he was impressed or not that I spelled his name.

The other activity Daniel and I did this week was match the upper case letters with the lower case letters.  It was just a basic introduction so he could see that there was a difference.  He surprised me though when he called lower case q a 9.  Maybe he does know his numbers better than I thought.

I didn't overload him with activities this week because he was starting a new activity this week – swimming lessons!  I had no idea what to expect.  His personality is to be pretty cautious in the beginning.  Once he gets comfortable he lets his guard down.  I get it.  I handle things similarly.

There are 6 kids in the class. It is obvious that Daniel is the youngest.  Most of the kids look 4 or even 5.

He took a seat on the wall with the other kids.  But a few minutes in, before they even went into the water, we heard, “I don’t want to swim anymore.”  He stuck it out though and completed the entire lesson.

He may have whimpered a bit (he was cold and unsure about the water) and hugged the wall, but he participated.  He had a smile on his face when it was his turn to work with the instructor.  Near the end they played a game where they went under the rainbow pool noodle.  Daniel was unsure about it, but once he tried it, he started cutting in line to get a few extra turns in.
This isn't so bad!
Finally, they were to jump off the side of the pool in the shallow end and the deep end.  He had to hold his teacher’s fingers, but he did it.  Last summer he jumped without abandon at my cousin’s pool, so who knows what he’ll do once he has more lessons.

His second lesson later in the week was even better.  I saw him release his death grip on the wall.  He participated in all of the activities.  He even jumped in the deep end without holding the teacher’s fingers.  I’m not sure whether it was intentional or not, but he seemed pleased when he came up from the jump.

I am planning to enroll him in swimming lessons around three times a year like I do for Nicholas.  I just think swimming is an important skill to have.

Onto another topic . . . Daniel has never been a good sleeper.  We have done all the "right" things and nothing has worked.  At this point in time, it is hard to say whether or not he'll even take a nap most days.  Well, this past week, swimming seemed to have a positive effect on his napping situation.  He took an almost three hour nap one day.  Then, he woke up after an hour yesterday.  He still looked tired, so I asked him if he was done or if he wanted to lay down longer.  He said that he was done.  Ten minutes later, I was talking to him downstairs when he didn't respond.  This is what I saw:

He ended up having another thirty minutes of sleep in this position.  I'm not sure if he'll nap everyday, but I don't think he's ready to give them up entirely.  What do you think?

In other news, getting this house on the market isn't going to be as easy as we first thought.  It will be at least another week or two.  We just have more work than we planned thanks to our a/c having a leak.  Hopefully, we’ll have a resolution or know what that resolution will be by the end of this coming week.

Finally, Daniel’s birthday is in a couple of days.  We’re hoping to find something fun to do on that day since all of his birthday parties are on other weekends.  He’s excited and he definitely knows that his birthday is almost here!

1-2-3

This past week I reviewed the numbers 1-10 with Daniel.  He can count without a problem, but he only recognizes about a third of the numbers.  This is something I am actually going to work on with him this summer.

He dot painted a bee with numbers 1-10 listed on it.

We did a couple of hands-on activities this week as well. One was where he needed to put the corresponding blocks to the numbers.  He ended up doing this activity a few times.

He also built a couple more book towers in his free time.

We matched a dog with a number on it to the corresponding bone that had that many dots on it.  He liked this activity too.  When we were done he wanted to put it on the fridge.  Unfortunately, I don’t have twenty magnets available.

I also like when I see my children incorporating things they have learned in their play time.  The other day I looked over and Daniel was making shapes with his cars.   He was so proud that he could make a square and a rectangle.  I remember being proud of Nicholas when he made a circle out of the blue with his cars one day when he was Daniel’s age.

On Friday, Daniel dot painted the numbers again.  This time it was on a dog.  Before he started painting, I pointed to each number 1-10 and had him say it.  I thought I would try and point to them randomly, but he said, “I already telled that.”  So, I left him to his painting.  Later, I asked him if he could smile and say, “Cheese.”  He replied, “I’m working.”  Apparently, the boy knows what he wants or doesn't want.

He did want to dot paint another dog, so I printed out another one.  Daniel can be a ham at times.  When I went to take his picture he said, “I have dot paint on my nose.  It is my mustache.”

Finally, I had some squares with numbers 1-10.  I mixed them up and had him try and pick out the right one.  Then, we put them in order.  For some reason, numbers are harder for him.  That’s one of the reasons I’m going to focus on it in greater detail this summer.

We still have two weeks of school left, so I won't talk much about summer school yet.  We always do a couple subjects just to keep them fresh though.  In the meantime, we have a lot going on in the next couple of weeks.  We’re getting the house ready to put on the market again, which means we have a lot of appointments related to that in the next week or so.  Hopefully, this time, we’ll find success.
