So, I may have been away from this blog a little longer than
normal. But, I made it back in time to
have at least one post in January!
Getting along and watching "Wheel of Fortune."
We’re
back in the swing of things after Christmas.
Both boys seem to be enjoying CC.
I’ve been in Daniel’s class for the morning each week and I sit with
Nicholas in the afternoon. Daniel has
been picking up a lot of the memory work.
He often will sing some of the songs he has learned when we are at
home. His weekly presentation is also a
highlight for him.

Science experiment on sound.
Learning about acids and bases.
Another sound experiment.
I love the concentration on my little artist.
Nicholas knows the memory work too, but I’ve really been
impressed with what he is learning in the afternoon. He is able to diagram sentences and his
writing has improved. I have him write
the first draft each week. Then, I work
with him the next couple of days to edit it and add in all of the required
elements. It’s not always easy, but I
think he’s enjoying it nonetheless.

In regards to school at home, they are both progressing well
through their curriculum. Daniel’s
reading is improving. We do 1-2 lessons
a week. If he seems frustrated, I ask
him if he wants to save it for another day.
Usually, he wants to keep going.
He is slowly reading some words without sounding them out. He also enjoys math and handwriting. The other day he started a math section
without me. I was pleasantly surprised
to see he was completing it correctly.
Imagine what he will do when he is able to read the directions!
I had a frightening reality about Nicholas the other
day. He could potentially start
Pre-Algebra as early as 6th grade.
Both boys seem to have an aptitude with math. Math is not my favorite subject. I had good grades in math when I had good
teachers. Thankfully, there are plenty of
options out there if I get out of my depth.
We continue to work on independence.
I started a notebook recently with a list of assignments that Nicholas
could complete alone. That way, if I am
busy, he can work on them. As Daniel
gets more schoolwork, I will need more one-on-one time with him. Nicholas should be less hands-on as he gets
older.
We’ve also jumped into the world of orthodontics. Seriously, I thought we had more time, but
our dentist told us to go for a consultation.
Nicholas’ x-rays showed that some adult teeth (that had not come down
yet) were at an angle. Nicholas has a
lot of baby teeth left and this is part of the reason why. So, we have entered phase 1 – the
expander. This should help the teeth
move more into their proper places so they can fall out. Once he has all of his adult teeth we will
move onto braces. Thankfully, that
sounds like it is at least 2-3 years away.
But, Phase 1 will last for about 10-12 months.
We’re still keeping up with our eagle’s nest. We can believe how much the eaglet has grown
in one month. Daniel made his own nest
out of a blanket in his room. He has his
baby and mommy eagles that sleep there.
We also have a pond (a blue blanket) with paper fish, so they can eat! We check on the real eagles several times a
day on the computer.

Overall, January was pretty ordinary. Sometimes it is good not too have too much
drama and excitement. I feel like this
month went by quickly. February is
starting to fill up with activities.
Will I blog about them is the question?
