Our Very Rough Christmas Week

It all started on December 18th when Evan suddenly felt warm and had the chills.  He ended up being sick the next two days.  And, we thought that was the end of it.  Then, Saturday (21st), Daniel felt a little warm when I got him out of bed.  He would not feel well the rest of the day.  He wasn't as warm the next day, so we took him to our family Christmas get-together.  We knew he wouldn't want to be held by people he didn't know well.  He ended up spending most of the evening watching “Bob” (Veggie Tales) on my mom’s Kindle.

Not quite himself

It was around that time when I started feeling a little out of sorts.  I ended up feeling warm that night, but felt okay Monday – well enough to get a haircut.  Then, I got home and I just felt horrible!  I couldn't sleep well at all Monday night.  The next morning both Daniel (who had not been himself yet) and I were feeling a little better, but not close to 100%.  Nicholas was now complaining of a stomach ache.  He also had one the day before.  After making him lay down for a couple of hours, he was fine.  I started to feel a little better and Daniel even showed signs of a smile.

We didn't go to the Christmas Eve service at church, but we did go to my parents’ house to exchange gifts later.  This is where we realized that maybe Daniel wasn't better.  He cried a lot!  He was inconsolable at times – wanting everything, but really wanting nothing.  The only thing that did make him happy was to watch “Bob” or pass out presents.  Nicholas, on the other hand, barely ate and didn't even want dessert.  This made me think that he wasn't at a 100% himself.  We didn't stay long and headed home to get some sleep.

Christmas Day I was hoping for a miracle – of health.  My body was now starting to feel like I had a chest cold now.  Daniel was falling asleep every few hours, which was a good thing since he hadn't slept well in days.  He wasn't interested in opening gifts, but he ended up playing with a few.  But, he was whiny and clingy.  Evan and I debated back and forth whether or not we should go to his parents’ house, or which of us should go.  We didn't want to miss out, but we didn't want to subject anyone to whatever we had.

He doesn't mind getting books.

You can tell that I don't feel like myself.

He likes this toy a lot now that it is out of the box and he feels better.

Since Daniel finished two good naps around the time Evan and Nicholas were to leave, we all decided to go.  Daniel slept during present time.  I was okay at first, but was quickly feeling drained and ready to lie down.  I was glad that Nicholas was able to enjoy himself though.  I didn't want him to be left out.  I did notice he wasn't eating that much though.  This trend would not end for another day or so.

Cousins!

All of the cousins minus the sleeping, sick one!

Superman!

Evidence that he was there!

On Thursday and Friday, Daniel was still clingy, but we had more moments where he would get down and play.  I was starting to feel better, but I could do without the coughing fits I was having.  I even lost my voice yesterday, but that has not stopped me from talking.  J    Nicholas also began eating a normal amount again.  So, we feel that there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel.

Watching "Bob"

But, we did manage to have some good Christmas moments:

A new-to-us car for Evan to drive back and forth to work
Time spent with family
Watching the boys play with their new toys
Finding time to read a new book

I was telling Evan that if Christmas is all about presents than Christmas is just a big let-down.  Yes, you have new things, but they are just things.   Most are only fun for a moment.  Kids’ toys, especially, break or get misplaced.  All that time spent wrapping is torn into and the paper is thrown away.  Thankfully, Christmas is really about Jesus.

So, that was our very rough Christmas week.  We're not looking to repeat that next year!  We're hoping for a healthy New Year!

Report Card – The First 18 Weeks

We don’t do grades in our home school right now (Nicholas does like an A+ on his paper though if he gets everything on a math test correct).  But, I do watch Nicholas’ progress and mastery of each subject.  I know which areas are his strengths and which are his weaknesses.  Most things come easily.  Our biggest battle comes when he thinks he already knows something and isn't teachable.  He is doing great overall though.

I thought I would go through each subject and touch briefly on his progress.

Math:  This is a subject he really likes.   The only time he really makes mistakes is when he rushes and doesn't check his work.  He is currently in a second grade math book.  Last I checked, he still wants to marry math.

He completed both sheets in less than 3 minutes each!

Handwriting:  This is probably his least favorite subject.  I spend a lot of time erasing and he spends a lot of time rewriting.  It is not that his handwriting is bad.   He just doesn't care enough to write the letters on the line correctly.  They’re just floating in between the lines.  I am looking for effort in this subject, not perfection.

He does handwriting four days a week.

Grammar:  The book we use has a script for me to follow.  He memorizes a lot of definitions; does copy work; memorizes poetry.  He doesn't have any feelings toward it.  I don’t think it is his favorite, but he doesn't complain about it either.  Just like in Classical Conversations, his mind is a sponge and he has memorized a lot this year.

Spelling:  He is a pretty good speller.  Nicholas is currently in the Level 3 book.  I, personally, am learning a lot of spelling rules I never knew.  It really helps me understand why we spell words the way we do.  If Nicholas makes a mistake when spelling, I usually just remind him of the spelling rule and he’s able to correct it.  I may be enjoying this subject even more than him.

He finished all of the sentences I dictated to him.

Reading:  Nicholas’ reading has improved so much in the last year.  He went from reading words to paragraphs.  He can read words well above his grade level.  I think the reading program we use has helped tremendously.  I also think that it helps that we read a lot together.

He is explaining his reading game to me.

This is what we do with reading games when we are done!

History:  This is a subject that he says he likes.  We’re reading chronologically and studying Ancient Times this year.  This book will be used by us again in future years.  Each lesson has a small activity that can be done at the end for three different age groups.  We don’t always do an activity for each lesson, but I try to do at least one a week.

Science:  We are studying flying creatures this year.  We started with a study on different kinds of insects and will be ending with birds and bats.  This is another subject where I've learned a lot too.  We haven’t done as many experiments as I would have liked so far, but hopefully we’ll be able to do more after Christmas.

If I were to imagine a report card written by Nicholas’ teacher, I think it would say:

Nicholas is a pleasure to have in class.  He’s always willing to answer questions.  He grasps the material quickly.  He’s working at or above grade level in all subjects.  Nicholas does need to work on not talking while others are talking.  He also is having trouble sitting still.  Overall, he is a great student and member of our class!

Thankfully, I am his teacher.  I do let him wiggle, but there are times when I require that he sit still or stand still for a short activity.  He does talk A LOT!  I’m trying to teach him to stop and listen and wait to talk or ask questions.  I had the opposite problem when I was in school.  Teachers loved having me in class, but I always got the comment that I needed to participate or raise my hand more.  I never liked to raise my hand, but I would answer when called upon.  I figured that was good enough.

Nicholas does like to learn and learns similar to me, so it has been easy to teach him, but hard at times.  When there is a struggle, I can clearly tell you why – he thinks he knows it all, or I am getting frustrated with him when I need to give him more grace.  He and I are both works in progress.  I’m learning so much about Nicholas and so much about myself during this process.  Both of our characters are being refined.  We have a lot of good days sprinkled with a few harder ones, but overall, it is working out so well.

A little physical education - swimming!

So, this is Nicholas’ progress for the first half of First Grade.  I’m looking forward to the next half.  We’ll be adding a writing program.  He has been interested in writing stories, so I thought it would be good to teach him the basics of sentence formation and paragraphs.

Nicholas’ Overall Grade:  Excellent!

19 Months Old

When you’re counting your child’s age in months, you really realize how quickly they grow up!  He is closer to 2 than he is 1!  He’s the age that Nicholas was on our 2nd trip to Russia.  I remember that Nicholas wasn't saying too much (even in Russian) on that trip and look at him now – he rivals the many great talkers in our family.  So far, Daniel’s words are: mama, dada, uh-oh, wow, and Bob.  He says a lot more sounds, but I haven’t recognized any real words yet.

There are toys in his shirt.  He likes to keep them there for later. ;)

Daniel still loves to color (or play with crayons) at the table.  When I am in the nursery at church, he has been going into the toddler class and doing really well.  He likes the older toys and he likes the crafts.  I actually saw him with dot paint in his hand one Sunday.  As he gets older, I’ll be even more intentional of having activities for him at the table.

He likes to read at the table too!

Daniel gets super frustrated sometimes and has no way of expressing it other than crying and whining.  I could do without that, but we’re trying to teach him to ask for help (with charades or pointing or whatever works).  He is very orderly and doesn't like when someone comes along and touches whatever he is working on.

He has probably gone on the potty now at least 10 times!  I think if we are intentional then he will at least go before and after he sleeps.  We’ll work on the other times in the near future.  So far, he’s only needed a “good job” and we haven’t pulled out any candy or other bribes – yet.

"Hey, give me some privacy!"

Daniel’s napping still isn't great.  I’m starting to think that it never will be.  I can often get it over an hour.  Usually he’ll cry out at least once or twice, but he does sleep the rest of the time.  He hasn't stopped giving us smelly presents at nap time either.  I think it is his way of paying us back for making him take a nap.

Daniel is a huge sports fan!  Well, he recognizes the Buckeyes’ and Browns’ logos and helmets.  We have found him a couple of times looking at the sports page too.  Evan is teaching him how to spell out “O-H-I-O” with his hands.  So far, he’s got the “O” down.

He is still our little monkey.  He can get on most furniture by himself.  In fact, he loves to sit on the recliner and then move to the very edge, so he can swing his legs and rock.  He also loves to climb into Nicholas’ bed and lay there.  He has started walking down the stairs now while holding onto the railing.  So far he’s been good about waiting for me before going down this way.

Daniel is our little comedian too.  He likes to put his hands in front of his eyes when we call his name or when he’s done something wrong.  It is as if he is saying, “You can’t see me!”

Yes, I put a spoon on my head.

He is still is a picky eater.  We’re trying to stop him from throwing his food on the ground if he doesn't like it or he’s finished eating.  So, we ask, “Bye bye, food?”  If that’s how he feels, he waves at it and we take it away.  It has cut the throwing down a lot.

He does enjoy a good snack!

Daniel also plays well by himself.  One day it got really quiet, so I looked around the corner and saw this:

He had put on his own hat and was reading so nicely.

Finally, Daniel and Nicholas may fight, but they also have a lot of fun together.  Daniel thinks his big brother comes up with some great ideas!

We just really enjoy this little guy immensely.  Daniel brings so much joy to us!

His Christmas Debut

Daniel did it!  He went on stage for his Christmas “presentation” yesterday.  Something is wrong with me when it comes to my children though.  I can’t keep it together.  They get me all teary-eyed.  When I saw Daniel being walked into the sanctuary with a little crown on his head, I couldn't help but get emotional.  He did pretty well standing up there.  Let’s face it – that’s all he did.  He didn't know the poem and he didn't know the motions.  But, he looked cute nonetheless.

Evan went up to the front row to take his picture.  So near the end, Daniel walked off and sat with Evan.

A little cookie before the service started to help with those pre-performance jitters. ;)

Getting ready to walk off the "stage" and onto Evan's lap.

Back in class

Now an after performance snack with Poppy.

That crown did not make it home in one piece!

I always love the Christmas songs or poems that the kids do each year.  All those years while I was waiting to be a mom, I would hope that one day I would see my kids up there.  And, this year I got to see them both.  It is a small thing, but it means a lot to me.  I can't wait for next year's performances.

Just a Few Christmas Activities

Besides getting most of my Christmas shopping done, we've participated in some Christmas activities recently too.  Aunt Amy gave the boys each an advent calendar this year.  They are both eager to open it each day.  I've seen Nicholas excited in the past, but even Daniel pointed to it and signed “more”.  Why all the excitement?  It has a piece of chocolate for each day of the month!  I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to go back to normal advent calendars again.

Evan’s company was one of the sponsors at our rec center’s Christmas party at the beginning of the month.  They asked him to dress up as Sp*nge Bob for it.  The costume didn't arrive in time for us to see him in action though.  However, the boys had a great time.  The Grinch and his dog Max were there.  I knew Nicholas would want to get his picture taken, but I didn't expect Daniel to run up and give the dog a big hug.  He couldn't get enough of the Grinch and Max!

I can't believe he wasn't scared.

They also had activities, face painting, food, and a chance to sit on Santa’s lap.  After the picture fiasco in October, I didn't know what to expect with Daniel.  But, he sat up there.  Maybe letting him eat his cookie in line helped get him ready.  He still had half of it in his hand.

Getting a snowman painted on his cheek

There was a snafu at Evan’s work about how this rather large costume was getting back to the office.  Somehow it ended up in our kitchen for a few hours that evening.  Evan decided to put in on so the boys could have their own character meet-n-greet (of a show we don’t even watch).  Nicholas loved it.

But, Daniel was freaked out!  Maybe because he was eating his dinner and didn't know what this large yellow sponge with eyes was going to do.  So, Evan quickly headed out of the room.  My only concern was how much Evan liked being in the costume.  I didn't know he’d have to wear yellow tights!

Get away from me!

And, don't come back!

Finally, Nicholas sang up in front of the church with the kids from his Wednesday night program today.  He looked a little nervous, but I heard he was more comfortable the second service (my mom stayed while he sang again since Evan and I were teaching today).  I really enjoy watching him perform each year.

All dressed up for his performance

Close-up!

The lighting wasn't that great.

I found out today that Daniel will be up front next Sunday.  I know the younger kids are going to act out a poem, but I didn't know if they were planning to bring up Daniel’s age group – they are!  That could get interesting.

I'm enjoying experiencing Christmas through Nicholas' and Daniel's eyes.  It makes it feel a little more like Christmas.  Nicholas will be having some more fun activities/experiences in the next two weeks.  Stay tuned.
