Well, Evan is back to being unemployed. Let me explain. Evan was a dedicated employee that worked for his last company for ten years. He isn’t the type of guy to show up for one day and quit the next, unless there is a good reason.
I’m going to make a generalization here. I feel it holds true for most men. When men do not work, they often lose their sense of purpose. Evan was restless. Evan was ready to get out there. A job opportunity came along, which you could probably tell that I wasn’t too thrilled about. But, we figured a job was a job, even though we had some apprehension about it.
Evan went to work and it was okay, except for the fact that he would be gone 12+ hour a day, six days a week. The extra long hours weren’t truly represented in the interview process. He also would be working with chemicals, which we weren’t too thrilled about, but figured it would be okay for a few months until he found something better.
Well, Evan came home and was exhausted. This is normal for a first day of work, especially a long one. Then, Evan went up to bed and got SICK!!! Not to be graphic, but he was sick multiple times. He didn’t sleep well the entire night. When he woke up for work the next day, he got sick again and again and again.
He didn’t want to call off on his second day, so he tried to call into work to explain his situation, but reached no one. Being the diligent (or out-of-his-mind due to illness) worker he is, he decided to drive to work. On the way he got sick a few times, so he turned around and came home. He finally got hold of his boss and was told to come in when he felt better. It turns out that he was sick until about 1:00 that afternoon.
We spent some time praying about it and just didn’t feel any peace about staying in this position. It was not good for his schooling (He had tried to take a quiz online that night, but I had to nudge him to remain awake). It was not good for Nicholas who saw Evan for about 15 minutes that night. And, apparently, it wasn’t good for his health.
We don’t know if it was the chemicals that made Evan sick, or just a virus. But, we do know that we’ve had more peace since he decided not to continue with this position than we did all of Tuesday. Yes, he needs a job. We’d like him to have one sooner than later. But, I was reminded of something today in Bible study. God is faithful!
God is faithful, but usually we are not. We are always looking ahead to our plans and jumping ahead of His. We think we know best. This position had so many red flags, but we jumped ahead because it was there. I think that the right job will be here soon. And, when it does, we will have that peace.
My friend Kristy and her husband prayed Monday night that Evan would have a sign about whether or not this job was for him. I asked her, and I will ask anyone else who wants to pray for us about future job prospects, to keep your signs vomit-free, please. Evan and I kindly thank you.
“The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to You and You give them their food at the proper time. You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.”
