Evan and I have a hairdresser that we have been going to for quite some time. Each time we made our appointment in the last nine months, we would tell her that we might have to cancel because we would be in Russia. And, each month came around and we were still here. Luckily, it worked out last month that we had our haircuts right before we left and then made an appointment for July 8th. We told her we would return with a new client. When we got off the plane two out of three of us needed a haircut really bad and the other one, a trim.
We weren’t sure how Nicholas would handle the haircut, but we knew he had haircuts in the past. Since he tends to sweat a lot we decided on a shorter cut. I went first so he could watch and see that Mommy wasn’t being hurt. In fact, he seemed to be enjoying himself. He even picked up a broom and attempted to sweep up some of the hair. We thought we may even get a free haircut out of the deal for his services. But, we found that instead we would be compelled to tip our hairdresser a whole lot more than we had planned.
Nicholas went next and he didn’t even want to sit in the chair. Thankfully, my sister came too because we needed her to help hold him down. Yes, it took three adults to hold him in the chair and even then he seemed stronger than an ox. We’re glad we were the only ones there because he also screamed bloody murder the entire time. I don’t know how they cut his hair at the baby home, but apparently, not like it was done this morning. In the end, it turned out to be a cute cut. When we got him home we had to give him a bath. Between the sweat and the hair, he looked like a little werewolf!
Nicholas is being exposed to so many new things each day. Some things he handles better than expected. Other things . . . not so much. We did take him to the store yesterday morning and was impressed by how well behaved he was. First, he helped me take a wipe and clean off the shopping cart. Then, he sat quietly in the cart. He never reached for anything. He was just content.
He is also handling his car seat very well. If you remember from Russia, it was optional. If he didn’t want to sit in it, he didn’t. He doesn’t have a problem here. He loves to look out the window and see all the big trucks (it sounds like “tucks” when he says it). He even took a nap on the way home this morning. I’m sure all the screaming may have helped in that area.
It is really starting to feel like he belongs here. We no longer feel like just his babysitters, but rather his parents. We have some more adventures coming up: the church nursery, his first U.S. doctor’s appointment, first birthday cake/cookie (we’re going to celebrate my birthday – again), meeting new friends, and so much more. We can’t wait to see how Nicholas does.
